FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was established by inventor and entrepreneur, Dean Kamen, who wanted to give students the opportunity to participate in science and technology.  Kamen searched for an activity that captured the enthusiasm of students. A program combining sports competition with the use of science and technology had a lot of potential.

The FIRST mission is to inspire the minds of young people in order for them to learn the role of a leader in the field of science and technology.  Providing them with mentor based programs that build their science, engineering, and technological abilities, and inspire further freedom to innovate. This fosters well-rounded life skills including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

FIRST is a volunteer driven organization which is based on partnerships with individuals as well as businesses, educational institutions, and government.  Many respected companies provide funding and mentors that together help to make FIRST’S mission a reality. You have the opportunity to join over 90,000 committed volunteers who are an important part of introducing over 250,000 young people to problem solving through engineering.
